Okay, so I like the idea of Polar's OwnIndex factoring into your OwnCal readings, because better fitter athletes are usually more efficient at doing work than fatter athletes. Thus if you have an OwnIndex of 67, you should be able to do more work than someone with an OwnIndex of 45. However, I feel that there are some pretty big inaccuracies with the OwnCal system, particularly will biking. Comparing it with the readings of a PowerTap, it's pretty far off. I don't even look at OwnCal anymore.
Maybe it's just that you're out of shape, so your heart rate is higher and you might be less efficient, but for someone your weight I would guess you'd probably burn about 110 calories per mile. Now if you were really out of shape and your body's efficiency was much lower, 140 might seem reasonable... so maybe the 540 reading isn't so bad. I juts remember when I was in fairly good shape and wearing a heart rate monitor, I was able to get a pretty good calorie-to-mile ratio of about 110-120, which seemed about the same as those articles in Runners World told me.
Again though, comparing polar's readings to the PowerTap, it's off by maybe 200 Calories per hour, if not more!
So really, I almost feel like OwnCal is about as useful as two other statistics: Average Heart Rate and Time.
Also, 41mph, not bad! I could never break 37 descending Chantry until the last part where it was a straight shot, then I could blast it and do a quick tuck to hit 45/46.
